Offline Topo Maps App Reviews

Missing trails

Im struggling to use these maps to create an itinerary because theyre missing trails, camp sites and lean tos. The Topos are fine, but honestly. The Nat Geo maps for areas like the Adirondack park more useful because I can clearly see roads, trails and camps. I wish a map program existed that I could load on my tablet that would offer me great topo maps and trails and this product isnt it.

Balanced Well

Ive been seeing this app get unjustly downvoted because certain users are plainly ignorant of what this is for. OTM will not hold your hand. This is not an app for an amateur city person on a weekend stroll, someone who needs 24/7 mobile data. I know its hard for some people to believe, but your phone is not God, and doesnt work everywhere. For the skilled adventurer in remote locations, however, this are as good as it gets. There are a wide variety of maps, and more if you upgrade to Gaia GPS. They download easily, but yes, can be HUGE, so use dsl/cable. Once youve downloaded the areas at the resolution youve selected, OTM comes VERY much in handy. The map maker could improve things by making the interface clearer, and making the maps on device a bit easier to negotiate. Also, this app used to have Mapquest roadmaps; when Mapquest recently eliminated their 3rd party service, this was quietly eliminated. Current roadmap options dont cut it. I feel for the devs in this issue. But some heads up for when map servers are cut would be nice, as would a roadmap which has some decent terrain relief and clarity. Look, kids, for the price, this cant be beat. No subscription nonsense, no clutter, no bloated fees for map packs like other apps... just lots and lots and LOTS of topo maps for jaunts to just about anywhere. Thats the deal.

Great App

This is just the app I was looking for. Meets my needs completely.

Nice resource for local geography

Like having drawers of topo maps with you.

Works great

Does what I need it to do. That seems to be asking a lot these days...

Offline Topo Maps

Love it!

Useful and economical

Ive used this app during 10+ mile hikes with no cell coverage and it does work if you have downloaded the maps ahead of time. Im planning to use this app on my first multi day backpacking trip but will have battery backup. Dont forget to save your map ahead of time. Free within the app! Great value!

Great App for Hiking

I used this all the time to verify my location while hiking. I run into so many newly created trails from idiots that think they are making it easier by short cutting the existing trail. This app allows me to have offline access to high resolution Topo maps to verify what is the real trail or not. It is not a waypoint navigation app, but I dont need or want that. It works great and I use it all the time, recently in Sedona and the Big Island.

Love it, have request

Love love love the app, does just what I need in so many ways. I like to find "old things" and the ability to turn on older versions of topo data makes this app fun to use for that purpose. It does everything I want, and nothing I dont want! Request: a better way to manage data stored by the app. Probably apples fault, but when I try to reduce the amount of stored panels, iOS doesnt reflect the freed up space in settings usage info.

Love this useful app for hiking and more

I love the openhikingMap. It accurately shows the trails I hike. The compass is surprisingly useful (I just used it to check the direction to look to see the Orionid meteor showers. And I used the altitude to check my risk of flooding and also to verify my vertical ascent on my hike. Cool.

A map makers go-to app!

There are a lot of map apps out there, have tried several. This is the only one I keep on my phone. The topos are a bit dated, which is to be expected for a free app. When you are hiking, camping, hunting, or otherwise in areas with no cell service, this app will help get you back to civilization....or at least know how far away civilization is. I can think of a lot of map making related reasons to have this app, but the safety aspect of it is a really big reason to have it as well.

Great app

I can always hike alone with this app, never lost

Perfect

I have used this app for 2 years and it is wonderful to have by your side to make new discoveries. Best topo map app ever. Thank you for creating it!

Doesnt follow its own manual

It is easy to get topo maps. But thats the end. Neither the screens in the the iPhone 5s nor the iPad 3 match the pictures in the manual. Its performance isnt even close to that of a handheld GPS.

Much Improved

When I first downloaded this app, I wasnt impressed. I had been using it with Bad Elf GPS and never got it to work correctly. Maybe user error? But tried it again on a multi day rafting trip. Download the map of the area before heading out. Once on the river I kept trying and finally figured it out and it worked great. I was able to find where we were to the river mile map, mark future camp location, measure the river miles..... Plan to download many other maps for our outdoor adventures. Now to figure out how to take pictures of way-points and have them sync together.

Best Topo App

This is the best topo map app anywhere, with all kinds of excellent features. I use is for hiking, for getting the lay of the land, end even occasionally when flying a seaplane.

Pretty darn amazing

Planning to use this on an iphone for a trip to the sierras. I was able to add a bunch of milestones along the route, much easier to use than my GPS unit.

Must have for hunting

Ill start with the only negative Ive found with this app. It drains your device battery rather quickly. You need to check battery strength before heading into the woods. Fully charge in your vehicle and youre good to go. Now, for the meat of the review. I use this app all the time during hunting season. I rarely use a gps as this has taken its place. It is extremely easy to use. You can mark numerous waypoints close together and still decipher the difference between them. I always mark my vehicle and head out. The ability to pull up aerial photos is invaluable. I have found the topo lines very accurate as well. This is a must have to hunt effectively. Especially if you hunt public land, like me.

Great app. for prospectors.

A+

Good app

Useful basic GPS map. Very easy to download maps and plot where you are. There are much better navigation apps, such as Pocket Earth, to do car trips but for the booneys, this one is great.
